Archetype Beats is a series of short beat tapes, birthed from the first batch of beats Rolled Gold created during quarantine, after a long hiatus from beat-making. Almost all of the tracks are in the order they were created in, showcasing Rolled’s experimental process and how he chooses to repeat many archetypes, including slowing down his samples, tapping out drums from his breaks, and most recently, chopping up saxophone recordings from a session last year. The artwork for the 4-part series is a surrealist painting of center city Philadelphia by Richard Metz , chopped into 4 quadrants; one for each EP. This project focuses more on jazzy textural ambiance and grimy boombap grooves than Rolled Gold ’s previous work, which is a slightly heavier on trap beats and soulful R&B grooves.
