Gimmie That Beat

Archetype Beats is a series of short beat tapes, birthed from the first batch of beats Rolled Gold created during quarantine, after a long hiatus from beat-making. Almost all of the tracks are in the order they were created in, showcasing Rolled’s experimental process and how he chooses to repeat many archetypes, including slowing down his samples, tapping out drums from his breaks, and most recently, chopping up saxophone recordings from a session last year. The artwork for the 4-part series is a surrealist painting of center city Philadelphia by Richard Metz , chopped into 4 quadrants; one for each EP. This project focuses more on jazzy textural ambiance and grimy boombap grooves than Rolled Gold ’s previous work, which is a slightly heavier on trap beats and soulful R&B grooves. Philly producer Small Professor shares an incredibly poignant single, “wish cops would stop killing unarmed black people” , which he's dedicating to the memory of Breonna Taylor . The piano-laced song centers on a flip of Special Ed ’s powerful verse from “Crooklyn” , which resonates just as strongly now as it did for Spike Lee ’s 1994 classic film. The track will be featured on the first volume of Small Pro ’s A Jawn Supreme series due out next Friday, June 26 , through all major digital retailers and streaming platforms with future installments dropping later this year. The title is derived from Samuel L. Jackson ’s role as DJ “Señor Love Daddy” in Spike Lee ’s iconic 1989 film "Do The Right Thing" , which proves to be just as relevant in today’s racially unjust and violent climate as it did when it was created, and of course long before.
